Giaschi & Margolis
is a firm of litigation and commercial lawyers located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. We have three partners, Christopher Giaschi,
Robert Margolis and Elyn Underhill. We practice in affiliation with
Thomas
Cooper & Stibbard, an international shipping and trade
law firm
based in London, England and with offices around the world.
Our
litigation practice is primarily in the fields of insurance,
maritime and transportation law. Our clients are mostly insurance companies who
specialize in marine, cargo and transportation related insurance. A large part
of our practice is subrogation on behalf of underwriters although we also do a
significant amount of defence work.
Our
commercial practice is primarily in chartering, International trade and
ship building contracts.
OUR PARTNERS
Christopher
Giaschi was called to the Bar of
Ontario in 1988 and to the Bar of British Columbia in 1991. He is a graduate of
the University of Toronto (B.A., 1982), Osgoode Hall Law School (LL.B., 1986)
and York University School of Business (M.B.A., 1986). He is an adjunct
Professor of Maritime Law at the University of British Columbia, the
West Coast Vice-President of the Canadian Maritime Law Association, the Chairperson of the
Legislative Reform Committee of the Canadian Maritime law Association
and a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Maritime Law Association.
He is a past Chairperson of the National Maritime Law Section of the Canadian
Bar Association and of the B.C. Branch of the Maritime Law Subsection of the
Canadian Bar Association. He has also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the
Marine Insurance Association of British Columbia, as Chairperson of the Education Committee of the
Marine Insurance Association of British Columbia, and as a member of the Executive Committee
of the Ontario Branch of the Maritime Law Subsection of the Canadian Bar
Association. He has practiced law in both Ontario and British Columbia and
has appeared as counsel in numerous cases before the Federal Court of
Appeal, the Federal Court Trial Division, the British Columbia Court of Appeal,
the British Columbia Supreme Court, the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Ontario
Court General Division. He is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars

Robert
Margolis was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1985 and was admitted as
solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 1993. He is a graduate of
the University of British Columbia (B.A., 1979; LL.B., 1983), the University of
Western Ontario (M.A., 1980), the University of Oxford (B.C.L., 1984) and the
University of London (LL.M., 1986). He has been a lecturer at the Faculties of
Law of the University of British Columbia, University of Hong Kong and the
National University of Singapore. He is the author of numerous learned articles
on maritime law and has practiced maritime law in both Canada and Japan. (To

Elyn
Underhill
was called to the bar of British Columbia in 1985. She is a graduate of Trent
University (B.A., 1981), Osgoode Hall Law School (LL.B., 1984) and University of
London (LL.M., 1988). She is past Chairperson of the Air Law Subsection of the
B.C. Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. Elyn has appeared as counsel in the
Supreme Court of British Columbia, Court of Appeal for British Columbia and the
Federal Court of Canada (both at the trial and appellate level). She practices
